Koh Tachai (Tachai Island)

Get barefoot on the white sandy beach, witness the natural way of life of Poo Gai or chicken crabs at Koh Tachai. Pearl of the Andaman and paradise for your honeymoon.

Located between Similan and Surin Archipelagos, Koh Tachai is the latest member of the Similan Islands National Marine Park and a new tourist destination, famous for its spectacular white sandy beaches, azure crystal clear water and endangered species of crabs called ‘Poo Gai’ or chicken crab, which you rarely see elsewhere. On the ferry to the island, if you are lucky, you will see a pod of dolphins swimming alongside the ferry, there is an abundance of marine life in this area and dolphins are just the beginning.

Upon arriving at the island, you will be greeted by its stunning unique long beach. The white sands on the seashore come from coral remains, but time and the tide have turned them to soft, powdery sands that are smooth and gentle to touch, so why not take off your shoes and walk barefoot along the beach?

Recommended Activities: :

Stroll slowly along the beach, savoring the tranquility and beauty of the Andaman waters, relax by the sea and don’t forget to take lots and lots of photos.

Their natural habitat is usually at a stream or humid areas like a hollow of a tree, underground or at the wood behind the island. This crab is a rare species, but not hard to find and take photos. Besides the crab, you can observe other local animals such as Lyle's flying fox, giant hermit crabs, emerald shells, or Nicobar pigeon that can hardly be seen off the island.

Scuba diving or snorkeling. The underwater world of Koh Tachai is truly amazing with unique and diverse marine life where you can enjoy colorful fishes and corals, or a chance of observing larger animals like Whale sharks, leopard sharks, eagle rays or manta rays passing by.

How to get there

The easiest way is to buy a one-day trip package from a tour operator in Phang Nga or Phuket because Koh Tachai does not allow people to stay overnight. The recommended place to take a ferry or speedboat is at Tab Lamu Pier in Thai Muang district of Phang Nga, located on Phang Nga- Takua Pa Road. This is the closet pier to Similan islands and the journey to Koh Tachai takes 3-4 hours.
