Thai Style

A wedding is the outset of a couple’s life where two souls agree to spend the rest of their lives together. Each country has its own unique wedding style. The Thai-style wedding is known for its charm and beauty, which has attracted a number of foreigners whom are keen to have their wedding in the Thai traditional style. Firstly, the groom’s side of the family has to make an official approach for the bride from her side of the family. Phu yai or senior and well-respected relatives of the groom side have to come to the bride’s family and ask for concurrence, followed by the discussion on the dowry. If both sides of each family agree, an auspicious day and time for the wedding ceremony will be arranged.

When the day comes, the groom will head to the bride’s house with khan maak procession. People in the procession carry items of good meanings in even number to represent couple life. The procession is a lot of fun and is accompanied by musicians playing traditional instruments and the entourage dances its way to the bride’s house. When the groom’s family reaches the bride’s home, the access into the bride’s room may be blocked by symbolic doors or gates. And the groom side has to get through each gate of silver or golden gate, made by the bride’s relatives using gold or silver necklaces. The groom needs to offer the money prepared in the envelopes as “key” for each gate. The groom may be given a hard time as the gate guardians joke and tell him the money isn’t enough to gain access. Once the gates have been successfully negotiated, the groom goes to bring the bride to her parents. The groom’s family presents gifts to the bride’s family. Gifts will also be handed to the bride and her family (usually gold chains or necklaces) and the dowry will be presented for inspection. Then, the groom gives a ring to his bride and the couple pays respect to the parents of both families.

The next stage is the conch shell ceremony which is chaired by a revered monk. The monk would anoint on the forehead of the groom and help the groom anoints on his bride’s. The nuptial good luck thread is put on the heads of the couple and their parents start pouring holy water from the conch shell onto the hands of the newly-wed. The conch shell, according to Brahman belief, is a sacred item which will bring good luck to the bride and the groom. Then, it is time of banquet where the newly-wed greet and thank the guests. The wedding ceremony ends with the preparation of bridal bed. The old couple, whose marriage is the strong evidence of love and success, is waiting in the bridal room. They will prepare the bed and sprinkle the bed with petals of flowers and money for flourishing couple life before giving the newly-wed blessings and leave the room. Finally, the parents of the bride would ask the groom to take good care of their daughter and that is the end of the ceremony.

Indeed, this is the wedding ceremony of people in central Thailand. There are other traditions of Thai wedding ceremony observed by locals of other regions. The wedding of northern Thais is called “kin khaek”. This ceremony is quite similar to the one of central region, but it features “bai sri su khwan” ceremony. According to a local belief, everyone is born with “khwan” or spirit. And wedding is to bring the khwan of the couple together so this ceremony is held to combine the spirits of the two for a happy marriage life. After the bai sri su khwan ceremony, the guests will gently pour lustral water onto the hands of the newlyweds, and the final stage is the ritual to give blessing to the marriage. The newlyweds will be asked to sit under a tripod, which will support the bride and the groom, then, the chanting will be given to them so that they have a good life.

Finally, it is the party time, featuring northern dishes.

The northeasterners also have their own tradition of marriage. The groom’s family starts by approaching the bride’s parents and offering them with betel nuts. If the bride’s side agrees, they will accept by eating the betel nuts and then negotiating the dowry, followed by the proposed marriage date.

The ceremony is similar to the traditional wedding of other regions with khan maak precession, the silver-golden gate and the bai sri su khwan ceremony.

Last but not least, it comes to wedding of the southerners. It starts from “yab” or approaching and asking for permission of marriage from the bride’s family. The rest of the ceremony is not different from the wedding of the other regions, which include the khan maak precession, the silver-golden gate, the banquet and the bridal bed ceremony.

Clearly, the wedding ceremony of each region in Thailand is quite similar but with some different features.

Muslim Style

In Islam, wedding is known as “nikah” which means a contract between a man and a woman to live as husband and wife. Wedding is a sacred ritual for Muslims as they believe it is a bond of two souls, which have to be together till death do them apart.

The main condition for a Muslim wedding is the consent of the bride and the groom as well as their families. Also, another condition is that the bride must not be under “iddah” or the period, which a woman must observe after the death of her spouse or after divorce. This period lasts four months.

Like other wedding traditions in Thailand, a Muslim wedding starts with the approaching from the groom’s side. The groom would ask a well-respected senior figure to ask for permission from the bride’s family. After the agreement of both sides, a “mahr” (the mandatory required amount of money or procession paid by the groom to the bride’s family) will be determined, at which the wedding day will be selected.

On the wedding day, the groom and his family will go to the bride’s house with mahr and the nikah is arranged. The “wali” (guardian) of the bride will deliver a statement to ensure that the groom accepts this marriage as following:

“You (addressing the groom’s name) agrees to marry the daughter (address the bride’s name) with the agreed mahr?

Then, the groom responds:

“I agree the nikah with Ms… (addressing the bride’s name) under the agreed mahr.

Then, the wali reads out the Koran on the chapter related to marriage to complete the official ceremony. After this, there will be a walima or marriage banquet. The walima will be held next day after the nikah making it a two day event.

Chinese Style

As time has gone by, the traditional Chinese wedding in Thailand has been adapted. On the wedding day, the groom has to go to the bride’s house at the auspicious time. He has to bring with him a bouquet and a golden hairpin. At the bride’s place, he has to get through the silver-golden gate and, just like the Thai traditional wedding, the key to those gate is “ang-pao” or money in red envelopes. Once making his way to the bride, he will give her the bouquet and the pin. Then, the couple pays respect to the bride’s parents as a farewell and then eats the red sweet flour for a sweet couple life. An entourage is then headed by the man holding a lamp, which represents a bright life. The bride’s father will walk his daughter to the vehicle, blessing her before the departure to her marriage.

When the vehicle arrives at the groom’s place, the couple has to pay homage to the spirits of the house as well as the late ancestors of the groom’s family. Then, there will be a tea ceremony for the parents and relatives of the groom. It ends with the couple having the red sweet flour.

Three days after the wedding, a male relative or brother of the bride will come to bring her back to visit her parents. She has to bring home some fruits and sweets and there will be a tea ceremony for the bride’s family. It ends with the banquet to welcome the son-in-law and that marks the end of the Chinese-style wedding.
